Recent Street Art...

After a couple of failed attempts, have discovered a new method of street art... the wheat paste. I actually use my own kind of glue which is a little more expensive. Anyone out there know of a cheap recipe for wheat paste? The image on the left was actually not intended to go up. But its a little hard to see when your trying to crouch in the dark behind wheelie bins for the sake of your art:)

I submitted this drawing for the counthigh project. Which, even if like most people, including me, you think your not an artist, is a good opportunity to explore and get the latent creative juices flowing. So, go get a number!!

The same day I was doing the drawing, by utter coincidence, I happened to get together with an old friend for coffee who told me about an experience they had with prison that utterly transformed their perspective and changed everything. Transforming Grace is found in the darkest places.

Imagine my surprise last year to find that someone had taken a photo of one of my stencils and sent it into the local paper! Weird.. Even weirder that they actually published it!! Thank you who ever you are!

brief sketch...

Theres been some articles in the local paper recently about folks that are struggling under the current weight of rising prices, the housing shortage and such. This is a brief sketch I made from a photo of a pensioner who is struggling to make ends meet. There was a front page story of a guy who is living in an abandoned car in Airport West.

Trusting the line

Alot of the time I agonize over my images and drawings. Never satisfied, I put alot of pressure on myself and I think this often strangles the vitality out of anything I do. An idea that begins to germinate is often ruined by these expectations. I start a drawing and often try to "fix" things I know arent right. This mostly leads to a busy strangled mess. Trusting the line, not knowing exactly where it will lead (maybe nowhere?) or what it will produce is something I have been attempting the last couple of days, by drawing with pen, straight from life. Which I do from time but not nearly enough. Its a good discipline. Learning to trust your line is important, I feel, if drawing is to become more fluid.

This Weeks Drawing...

Well, wouldnt you know it... a lone figure in a desolate landscape.... At least this time there is a light source coming from somewhere other than the right side of the frame... And its a little crinkled due to paper buckle which didnt iron itself out on the scanner bed.

Tonality

Someone sent me these tonal drawings with a theory that my heavy use of line could indicate my black and white view of the world, and (my) black and white responses to most things.

Tonal drawings, according to the person who sent these, rely on tonality of colour and light and dark, and shading ( obviously) to represent form, rather just line this is a much subtler, gentler approach to form. And in fact, is notable for its absence of line, yet creating strong effects.

This is a form of drawing I have almost never explored. Perhaps the sender of these very subtle and beautiful studies was suggesting that I could perhaps stand a little less hard edged lines in my life, and a little more tonality.

Recent Stuff

To some degree my access issues have been resolved... so here are a couple of recent things...


T - shirt I designed and printed for a friend. The finished print was done with a grey blue background. For a hand printing, it came out very sharp and I am glad to say I was pretty happy with the outcome...
Perhaps influenced by my recent time spent reading about the Expressionists. Ive been doing alot of stuff in ink in the last couple of weeks. Creatively, there has been alot going on recently... everything from ceramic sculpture to cartoons. And I have plenty of stuff I would like to post but must use some restraint.

Will be posting some new cartoons and other ink work later in the week...

Been a while unfortunately... I have heaps of stuff Id love to post, but Im waiting on the funds for a USB stick to emerge from somewhere so I can take my pics to the ole Internet Cafe...

Have an exhibition coming up in mid march which I will post details of as they come to hand. It is actually a fundraizer for some friend of mine.. who will be showing their great abstract minimalist work.. so if you buy a piece you will be contributing to the healing of the world, rather than some gallery snot noses pockets:)

Recent Stencil

Ive come within a hairs breadth of being busted by the cops on two occasions. One of which was trying to get this lovely lady up. That particular mission had to be aborted..

So she hasnt made it into public viewing... yet:)

Recent Oil Pastels

Been doing a lot of drawing still, but not much posting. So, heres an update.


I saw my mum get beaten pretty bad when I was about six. I saw a powerful film recently that inspired this last image. And after I drew it, the memory of my mum all black and blue came flooding back.

This one is a little confronting. I dont know where it came from. I just started drawing a reclining figure this afternoon and this is where it led me. I was thinking of the human figure in its most unsanitised state. Our society is so very good at sanitising the human figure. We are so often shielded from it at it's most vulnerable and ugly. When it suffers.

Ive known quite a few people that lost a loved one to a terminal illness. But as yet, I havent had to face it myself. Perhaps its presumptuous of me to try and portray something I have no personal experience of?
